Income tax to be largest revenue sector in 5 yrs: Muhith

DHAKA: Finance Minister AMA Muhith Thursday categorically said income tax would be the largest sector for earning revenue within next five years, as he found it as the best source of earning for the exchequer.

“There is fear among people regarding income source. The common people of the country also fear tax officials. Initiatives have been taken to remove those,” he said.

The finance minister came up with such an observation while addressing a programme organized by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) marking the National Income Tax Day at Dhaka Officers Club in the city.

He also said, “There is a great opportunity to perform social responsibility by paying income tax. So, everybody should come forward in this regard.”

The minister claimed that collecting revenue through income tax is increasing every year after 2009.

He expressed the hope that revenue collection would double through income tax in the current year.

Muhith observed that it requires more manpower for expanding the scope of NBR. “The government is considering the matter but it requires time.”

The finance minister told his audience that automation work of NBR is underway and different services are being made online in this respect.

With NBR Chairman Dr Nasir Uddin Ahmed in the chair, the programme was also addressed, among others, by convener of the programme-organizing committee MA Quader Sarker and BNR member Syed Aminul Kabir.

Meanwhile, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) staged a rally in the capital marking National Income Tax Day-2011 aimed at hunting new taxpayers. The tax march was inaugurated by Finance Minister Abul Mal Abdul Muhith in the morning.
The rally started from the premises of the National Board of Revenue  at Segunbagicha at 9:05am, paraded Motshaya Bhavan, National Press Club, different roads of Paltan and terminated at 9:50 am where it had started from.

The finance minister said, "The culture of tax paying has changed in the last two and a half years.  People are being encouraged more to pay tax than before."

The minister expressed the hope that maximum revenue would come from direct tax in five years.

Among others, lawmaker Rashed Khan Menon, NBR Chairman Dr. Nasir Uddin Ahmed, FBCCI president AK Azad, Dhaka Tax Bar president Advocate Ramij Uddin Ahmad, film-actor Elius Kanchon, cultural person Pijush Bandopaddyaya, Drama Director Mustafa Sarwar Faruqee and actress Tisha were also present at the rally.

Taxpayers of different levels and staffers of the NBR also took part in the rally.
