Homage paid to Bangabandhu in Australian Parliament
The lawmaker informed the parliament that she addressed a meeting organized by Bangabandhu Parishad Australia unit marking the National Mourning Day of Bangladesh at Lakemba Public Library Auditorium in Sydney on September 3.
The Health Adviser to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Professor Syed Modasser Ali, attended the rally as chief guest.
“All people present at the meeting paid tribute to Sheikh Mujib, known as Bangabandhu, and discussed his life and contribution for the nation,” she said in the parliament.
Mentioning Sheikh Mujib as a great leader of the last century, Michelle said Bangabandhu united his nation against the colonial rule and called for independence--and finally achieved it.
Terming victory of the Liberation War of Bangladesh as an extraordinary memento against colonial rule, the Australian lawmaker said, “The victory of liberation war has brought national and cultural freedom for Bangladeshi people.”
Michelle recalled that the movement for establishing people’s rights led by Bangabandhu was peaceful and democratic.
In this regard, she mentioned that the great leader spent most of the time of his young life in jail for leading movement.
“In sequel to the prolonged movement, he declared Liberation of Bangladesh on March 7, 1971, at Racecourse Ground in Dhaka. The nation spontaneously responded to his call and achieved victory through a nine-month-long fighting,” she also mentioned.
“But, it’s an irony of fate, Bangabangdhu and his family members were assassinated on August 15, 1975. So, the nation observes the National Mourning Day of Bangladesh.”
