Ministers to lose job if found corrupt: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Friday warned ministers that any of them would be fired from the cabinet if corruption allegations against them were proved with evidence.

“Specific evidence of corruption against any minister will be taken into account. If anyone can furnish proof of corruption against ministers, the ministers concerned will lose ministerial job,” she said—for the first time so loudly and clearly, as there have been clamors from her party ranks and outside alike.

The note of caution came from the head of government and party chief while presiding over a joint meeting of Awami League Central Working Committee and advisory council at her official residence Ganabhavan.

As there has been a flurry of criticisms over the communications sector for ramshackle rail and road conditions, the premier said her government is working relentlessly for the development of the country as well as its communications sector in particular.

Sheikh Hasina told her party policymakers that Indian premier Manmohan Singh’s Dhaka visit was successful as “Bangladesh has benefited from the tour”.

“The Teesta deal was not signed, but we were negotiating on the issue. There is nothing frustrating with the deal as it is the matter of time. We don’t want to fix any timeframe for the matter now.”
