No escape paying blood money

DHAKA: “You cannot get away doing compromise in exchange for blood money after committing murder. You won’t be allowed to buy justice simply because you have the money.”

A High Court bench Thursday made the blistering observations on the face of the bosses of a grand hospital of the capital city getting into the toils of law over the death of an eminent university professor.

Comprising Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Justice Govinda Chandra Thakur, the HC bench cast caustic comment on the doctors and officials of Lab Aid Hospital during the hearing on the death of Dhaka University teacher Mridul Kanti Chakrabarty under treatment.

During the hearing, the court asked deputy attorney-general MK Rahman: “Why police are still inactive in this respect? Why FIR has not been filed yet?”

Lab Aid chairman Dr Saleha Ahmed, director Abu Md Shamim, director Dr Sucharita Ahmed, director AKM Mahbubul Huq, Manjur Rahman, Munira Afrin and Dr Majedul Islam appeared before the court following summons.

In response to a query from the court as to how the patient died, Dr Majedul Islam said, “His pulse rate was 190/100, and that’s why we could not push saline in his body.”

After the hearing, the court ordered the attorney-general to submit a report within October 10 as to why an FIR had not yet been filed on the death, allegedly for negligence towards the patient’s treatment.
