The chairman of a parliamentary watchdog expects the government to allow investment of black money in the stock market.

"We are trying to make the finance minister understand the money whitening provision should be extended to the capital market alongside the bond market," A H M Mostafa Kamal, chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on finance ministry, said on Tuesday.

"Hopefully, we will be able to do that," Kamal, better known as Lotus Kamal, told reporters at Rupashi Bangla Hotel after a meeting with Dhaka Stock Exchange.

Finance minister A M A Muhith in his proposed budget for fiscal 2011-2 year kept provision for converting illicit money into white by paying 10 percent tax on government treasury bonds.

Both Dhaka and Chittagong stock exchanges have demanded a similar facility for the share market.

"The capital market has plunged into a big disaster. The market is now in a spot of bother," said Kamal.

Asked why institutional investors are shying away from the market, he said once the market is back to normal, everyone will regain hope to invest again.

He observed the market will be stable once the Securities and Exchange Commission takes full control of the market.

"The PE (price-earning) ratio is now vey low in the market. If I had Money, I would have invested now," said Kamal, also president of Bangladesh Cricket Board, the country's most cash-rich game governing body.
