Shahara's no-hartal stance not party's
The Awami League joint general secretary has said the home minister's announcement that they will not enforce shutdown in future is not a party statement.
"Only the party president can speak about the party's decision," Mahbub-Ul Alam Hanif said on Monday.
Home minister Shahara Khatun, also the party's presidium member, on Sunday said, ""Awami League won't break discipline or vandalise and call hartals if it goes to the opposition in future."
BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami are enforcing a 36-hour nationwide lockdown in protest against the government move to repeal the non-party caretaker government system and the recommendations of the special parliamentary committee on constitution amendment.
Asked whether any law would be enacted to ban general strike, Shahara said, "No new law is needed, people will resist it [hartal]."
Hanif at a press conference at the party president's Dhanmondi office said Shahara might have wanted to say that "Awami League will not declare irrational hartals".
Echoing the minister, he said mobile courts are punishing pickets in line with the law. "Not one innocent person is harassed," he claimed.
Mobile courts in Dhaka and around the country have penalised over 100 hartal supporters since Saturday.
Terming it unprecedented, BNP on Sunday criticised such punishment saying those were one-sided as no statement of witnesses are taken.
Rights group Ain o Salish Kendra on the same day voiced concern over the indiscriminate arrest and punishment of pro-hartal activists by mobile courts.
In a statement issued on Sunday the organisation said, "General people may also be affected by mobile courts being used in the name of preventing those violating law during hartal and political demonstrations."
