Investors go berserk, vandalize 50 vehicles: 8 held

DHAKA: Investors again staged a massive demonstration in front of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and ran riot through the busy business district Monday amid unrelenting fall in share prices.

The angry investors went berserk and vandalized over 50 vehicles and attacked different establishments in the business-hub Motijheel area, witnesses said.

Police held eight persons for damaging vehicles during the raging unrest.

Earlier at about 11:40am, the investors, under the banner of Investors Oikya Parishad, took to the street in front of DSE and staged demonstrations to press home their six-point demand.

They gheraoed the DSE office at about 1:05pm and then started vandalizing vehicles in front of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Industries Ministry.

Strong contingents of police were deployed in Ittefaq crossing and Shapla Chattar areas. “Shops in the area were shuttered by their owners at the time of rampage. The main gate of Bangladesh Bank was also closed,” says a firsthand report.

At one stage of the protests, the investors carrying brooms and shoes brought out a procession and burned tyres in front of the DSE building.

“Angry protestors also engaged in fisticuffs with police personnel at about 1pm as they were prevented from storming into the Bangladesh Bank premises in a desperate move,” says the spot report.

Dhaka Stock Exchange General (DGEN) Index shed over 51 points to stand down at 5,749 at about 12 noon on the day, fuelling the fire of rage of the investors in stocks, who had already lost a lot in the recent scam and crash of the stock market.

The volume of transactions stood at Tk 113 crore.
Of the issues traded, 164 declined, 50 advanced and 17 remained unchanged.

Chittagong stocks also marked a sharp fall Monday. The volume of transactions stood at Tk 20.32 crore.

Out of the issues traded till 12:15 pm, 82 declined, 38 gained and five remained unchanged.
