PM wants Oppn to shun hartal, talk in JS
The prime minister has urged the opposition leader to call their hartal off and return to parliament with a proposal for an alternative to the caretaker government system.

"Return to parliament, propose a new formula [alternative to caretaker government] as the court verdict has invalidated the old one," Sheikh Hasina said on Saturday pointing to Khaleda Zia.

Her remarks came a day before the 36-hour non-stop countrywide hartal to be enforced with the daybreak on Sunday.

Addressing party leaders and activists at Ganabhabhan, Hasina, also the chief of the ruling Awami League, criticised the opposition BNP for calling the hartal demanding that the unelected government system be retained.

"You [Khaleda] have the [bitter] experience of caretaker government. Your sons were tortured and then forced to fly abroad, and you yourself were also jailed. How could you forget such tortures?" questioned Hasina, who also spent about 11 months behind bars during the interim regime.

She explained that the proposal for annulling the non-party government system had been made [by the special parliamentary committee on constitution amendment] in line with the Supreme Court order.

The Supreme Court in a landmark judgment on May 10 cancelled the 13th amendment to the constitution that introduced the caretaker provision.

"You [Khaleda] indulged in corruption while in power. You're the country's first prime minister to legalise black money," she said.

"Awami League will remain active to protect democracy," Hasina said adding, "We've established democracy after a long struggle and nobody will be able to destroy our achievement. And no-one will be able to deceive people. We don't want to see further bloodshed in the country."

Awami League general secretary Sayed Ashraful Islam urged the party leaders and activists to remain vigilant about intra-party conspiracy.

He said, "We won't have to face danger again if anyone of us doesn't indulge in conspiracy. Conspiracy had been hatched against Bangabandhu and against the leader [Sheikh Hasina]. Our comrades foiled those conspiracies."

"She [Hasina) was freed from a military jail on this day. We were very anxious at the time," Ashraf said recalling the incidents during Hasina's release.

Members of the Awami League advisory panel Amir Hossain Amu, Abdur Razzaque, Tofail Ahmed and the party's central working committee were present at the programme.
