Trade between Bangladesh and Thailand could reach $1.0 billion in a year, from the current $ 750 million, Thai deputy minister of commerce Alongkorn Ponlaboot said Sunday.

"We need to remove trade barriers … There is a need for simplifying pre-shipment inspection and radiation certificate of Thai products," he said after a meeting with commerce minister Muhammad Faruk Khan at the secretariat office.

He said Bangladesh is a potential destination for Thai investors in textiles, garments, tourism, healthcare and infrastructure development sectors.

The Thai deputy minister said the Thai delegation discussed the possibility of setting up railway between Thailand and Bangladesh through Myanmar and strengthen relations between BIMSTEC members and South Asian countries.

"We've also proposed to set up Thailand- Bangladesh Business Forum," Mr Ponlaboot said.

Faruk Khan assured the Thai delegation of considering their proposals to gear up bilateral trade between the two countries.

Tasanawade Miancharoen, Thai Ambassador and high officials of the commerce ministry, among others, were present in the meeting.
